Winter solstice this year occurs at 3.27am GMT on 22nd December, our shortest day, and the end of a solar year, and beginning on a new one. Despite the dark and cold I love winter solstice. It is a time for renewal and rebirth. Whatever has been has been, it’s as dark as it is going to get, so we can take stock and look at what we would like to be different next year.
Just as a seed gathers energy in the darkness of the soil before it starts to germinate and reach for the light, so can we.
Winter is a yin time of the year, so a time to be reflective and receptive. To conserve and store energy, rather than expend it. All the energy dense foods around this time of year help with this. Leave the diet for spring.
Spiritually, meditation and gentle exercise to go within are good. Where would we like our focus to be next cycle?
This winter solstice the Sun is entering Capricorn. Although a social sign as the natural ruler of the tenth house and our aspirations, it is also considered to be a feminine sign, and is the third earth sign, and first sign of winter. So this supports the going within, grounding and being receptive. Allowing the dark to be there, knowing that all growth and life begins in the dark. It is a good time to nurture aspirations and hopes. To allow them to gain energy, ready to germinate when the time is right. To release our intentions for the year ahead.
We will have a retrograde Mercury this winter solstice, almost at the mid point of its retrogradation, passing the Sun. Retrograde Mercury is a good time to catch up with old friends and contacts, so good for the festive period. Just take the time to read the small print and go back over things.
The Moon this winter solstice will be waxing gibbous from Taurus, another earth sign, so good for finding comfort and enjoying the finer things in life. Jupiter and the Moon will be in a conjunction, so if you are lucky enough to get a clear night this be a small celestial treat to look out for. Jupiter expands, so in Taurus, hopefully it will expand all the festive goodness. A good time for giving and receiving.
