My first introduction to Reiki was in 2002, via a veterinary client, who advised me it would be good to learn. It was another 2 years before I did my first Reiki attunement in 2004, and joined the teacher's Reiki share group.
There are variations of the story as to how Reiki was discovered by Mikao Usui in Japan, but all have in common the realisation that there is a life force energy that flows through all of us.
Other healing systems such as Chinese medicine also acknowledge this fact, that we are essentially energy. When the energy flows well, we are well. When it does not, we experience some form of disease depending on the nature of the blockage.
It is gaining acceptance, even in the scientific community that many physical ailments have emotional causes at their roots.
When healing with Reiki the objective is to restore the flow of energy. The beauty of Reiki is that this can be done very gently with little or no physical contact. When treating clients I tend to touch the head and feet only, but this can be omitted. A very effective treatment can be given with no contact at all. Indeed distance treatments can also be given. How can it possibly work when two people are not in the same room and may be miles apart? I honestly don't know. But we have proven that quantum entanglement exists, one particle will move, and another (even light years away) will simultaneously make the same movement. So information can be transferred over long distances. There needs to be intention on the part of the Reiki healer and an openness to receive on the part of the recipient. Without these, in my experience, there is no Reiki.
When I have received Reiki I have had a range of experiences, from not much at all to profound shifts. I have also during treatments slipped into past life memories, so a lot can happen. It is an energy that needs to be treated with respect. Healing can sometimes hurt. We might feel worse before we feel better. We need to give ourselves space when we are healing. But if we allow the process, things can move, our perspective can change and life can improve in ways we maybe hadn't imagined.
There is a level of surrender with Reiki. How often in our lives do we allow ourselves to lie back and just receive for an hour? To take our striving and effort out of the equation and just allow. Even that alone can have a profound effect. We give ourselves and our bodies space. Our bodies know how to heal, but we need to give them the right environment and a chance.
