Pisces - going beyond

sacredspaceastrolo

Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac and for me was one of hardest to understand when I was learning astrology. As a water sign it is fluid, emotional and intuitive. As the last water sign it is mutable, so flexible and changeable.

I have come to see the zodiac as a journey through life. Each year the Sun goes round it, and each sign progresses from and builds on the previous one. As we saw in the last blog, Aquarius is emotionally detached and objective. There is responsibility with Aquarius to the community and a greater good. As we move out of Aquarius into Pisces we act out of love, not responsibility. And it a higher and selfless love. The ill defined nature of Pisces confused me for a long time. As we find our place in the community in Aquarius, we go beyond that in Pisces and into the spiritual realms. Pisces working well is compassionate, sensitive, spiritual and intuitive. It is where we become One with all that is. The historical ruler of Pisces was Jupiter, which brings expansion. In Sagittarius, also ruled by Jupiter, we went beyond our physical horizons and looked at the bigger picture. In Pisces we go beyond our psychological horizons and into the realm of spirit. It is where we end, and also before we begin, the next sign being Aries, the sign of the self. The modern ruler of Pisces is Neptune, named after the god of the sea. Neptune was discovered as film and photography were emerging. So illusion and dreams have been recognised as Piscean. There is also idealism here.

No sign is entirely positive, and Pisces is no exception. The shadow side of Pisces is illusion and sometimes deception. The deception is often of oneself and an inability to see things as they really are, preferring to cling to the dream. A lack of boundaries combined with illusion can leave one open to danger. Preferring an illusion over reality can also give way to addictive behaviours and substance abuse, as the user seeks to escape from real life.

We all have Pisces somewhere in our charts, whether or not we have planets or the Sun in Pisces so there will be an area of our life where the theme is Piscean.

Neptune and Jupiter as the rulers of Pisces naturally work well in this sign. There is no conflict of energy. The dreamy and illusory nature of Neptune is at home in Pisces, as is the expansive nature of Jupiter.

Mercury, on the other hand, as a planet that is concerned with logic and facts, does not get on well in Pisces. It is difficult for the Mercurial interest in data to find expression in a sign that is about dreams and intuition. Mercury in Pisces often get bogged down in illusion and sometimes deception. It has a hard time seeing the facts, which is it's strength in other signs.

Looking to the opposite sign can help bring balance, and when the Sun is in Pisces and we reach full Moon, we have our two luminaries opposite each other. So the full Moon in the Pisces cycle will be in Virgo. Virgo, as an earth sign, is grounding and is all about assimilating facts and logical order. Without the grounding nature of Virgo, Pisces runs the risk of being away with the fairies. Even if we have no planets in Virgo, the full Moon in the Pisces cycle is a time to reflect on how realistic our dreams and ideals are, and what logical steps we can take on the ground to make them reality. What dreams do we keep and work on, and what ones will stay up in the clouds.
